Vinnie plays well but I am not impressed at all!
Other guy's would pull off this stuff WAY more convincingly. Vinnie is one of my GUY'S for sure
but he hit's and misses like everyone does. Just because he can jump into metal and do it O.K. does not move me at all, and I will say it whether it is Vinnie or not. He is just another player to me, Amazing as he is! If it was another drummer there would not be any amazement.
Maybe we are kind of impressed to hear him pull off some fairly weak double bass I do not know. Leave this playing to other's. Go ahead guy's SLAY me I can take it [img]biggrin.gif[/img] I know it is VINNIE the annointed one I am talking about.

You have a valid point that he's not doing anything out of the ordinary on this track . My point is simply that he was asked to play with them . Why did they ask Vinnie when there are so many other guys out there that could do it and possibly better? And why was he asked to play with the Commodores, Leonard Cohen, Ray Charles, Duran Duran, Djavan, Al Cooper etc... [img]rolleyes.gif[/img] His resume and concept of fitting in to many situations is second to none.

I think it's kewl that he even did it. When it comes to this type of drumming, I still think the underrated hero is Ken Mari from House of Lords, he totally got the shaft in terms of recognition due to the many 'hair' bands that were around at the time HOL cam eonto the scene.
Ken can run circles around many of the rock/metal drummers out there including being able to do the really hip poly and ostinato stuff.

Well...I for one think that he did a great job on this track. Although I think the song is weak.

The fact that he pulls it off is a testament to his versatility and dedication to the instrument.

True... other's might have added some thrills, but he might have been asked to keep it rather straight.

Also, try to remember that Vinnie is not some 20 yr. old kid who can play 64th note foot patterns for 5 hours. He is in his 50's. So give him a little slack...Let's see what he did on the rest of the album.

I think there are probably one or 2 very important reasons why Dave asked Vinnie to play that were personal to Dave aside from Vinnie being a Wonderful drummer. And I agree with Randy's point 100 percent, very true!

Many say he auditioned for Zappa when he was 19? so he's like in his mid-40's now?

Ok, that aside, here's an opinion coming from someone who is an old school Thrash/Speed/Death Metal fan (and still am) along with being a Vinnie fan. From a Thrash Metal drumming standpoint, it's true, this is nothing at all extraordinary. That tempo of double bass is VERY mild compared to much of what's in that genre of music. Now, with that said, the reason I like what he's doing here is because A) he's tighter than a mesquito's ass on the track, and B) the groove during the choruses (use the beat at :40 as the reference) is nice. Yes, it's very straightforward, but his pocket and feel on something as simple as that is what gives him what I feel would be a slight edge over most Thrash/Metal drummers. As a Metal fan, the song is decent, but nothing great. (personal note: but it IS better than the dribble Dave's been putting out over the last decade or so for the most part)
